Summer Media Intensive Students Host Reel Revelations

As summer winds down, so too does our youth media training program (if only for a moment). This past Thursday, August 2nd, DCTV’s ground floor was packed with PRO-TV young artists, friends, family, and DCTV supporters for Reel Revelations: A Summer Youth Media Screening. This annual event marks the close of PRO-TV’s summer intensive program, with students sharing the films they made in one short month.

Kevin Guimaraes, a rising Senior at Columbia Secondary School, reflected on the summer, “Everyone at DCTV is focused on creating a film that says something. Being in an environment like that is really precious.”

This July, 50 participants split into seven groups to learn the fundamentals of crafting and producing a film. Each group focused on a timely issue seen in NYC communities. Topics included race relations, pollution, sexual violence, identity and more, and were explored through narrative, documentary, and experimental films.

The evening closed with an audience Q&A with the young filmmakers. As one participant noted, “The most important thing about making a film for me is meeting new people and sharing memories.”

The screening capped off a jam-packed month, which included a visit to Democracy Now and CBS News as well as a talkback with DCTV’s own Producers, Matt O’Neill, Jon Alpert, and Larissa Bills, among others. Manami Tsukamoto, a rising senior at Eastchester High School said this of her experience meeting the legendary Amy Goodman at Democracy Now: “It was really powerful to hear Amy talk about youth media’s importance as a form of communication. It connects the American public to the voices and experiences of populations they may not normally see. I learned that independent media can be a form of activism.”

As always, we’re incredibly proud of the work our students create in such a short time. We can’t wait to see a few familiar faces back at the firehouse when PRO-TV classes start up again this fall.
