Congrats to our Students

September 24th, 2020

It’s been an exciting month for DCTV Youth Media. After a remarkable summer screening this past July, we are so grateful to receive several accolades. Consisting of 16 films documenting the joys and challenges of teenhood during COVID-19, the student films of Stories Of Now shared often unseen perspectives with the public.

Council Member Margaret Chin issued Certificates of Commendation to each student, recognizing “their outstanding talent in conveying their stories during a time when our city and its citizens are struggling with a life-threatening pandemic, along with the ongoing fight for racial and social justice.”

Jacob Lam, Shania Brown, and Rahm Kosman’s short film The Cost of Freedom, which addresses the need for bail reform, took home the Gold Short Documentary Award at the JusticeAid Film Forum! Watch the film and Q&A (film begins @ 45:28 and the Q&A @ 52:34).

And last but not least, Esai Velasquez’ Transicion De Corona, Jessica Liang’s How We Grow, and Liam Schoenholt’s Implosion will be screening virtually at this year’s Japanese Uno Port Art Films festival from Fri 10/2–Sun 10/4 for free, followed by a Q&A on Sun 10/4 at 10pm ET.

Congratulations to all the young filmmakers! You continue to inspire us all.
