Two children, Murtaza from Afghanistan and Yagoub from Sudan, live in very different countries but are equally affected by war. One fled Darfur and now has to undergo a serious heart operation. The other lost his left hand to a landmine. They are among the endless civilian victims of war, wounded by bombs, bullets, mines and lack of medical care.

In Back Home Tomorrow, directors Fabrizio Lazzaretti and Paolo Santolini expertly interweave these two fascinating and heartfelt stories without commentary to create a documentary film of rich complexities and emotional resonance, while highlighting the remarkable work of the Italian aid organization Emergency.

The film made its US premiere at NYC’s Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, and was the recipient of the Prix Roberto Rossellini in 2008, and Cinereach Award in 2009.

Screening followed by a Q&A with Eric Talbert (Emergency USA) and Reva Goldberg (Cinereach), as well as Director Fabrizio Lazzaretti via Skype.

Fabrizio Lazzaretti is the son of a renowned filmmaker of Italian Public Television who spent his career covering military conflicts, and producing other socio-political and cultural documentaries. Lazzaretti began his own filmmaking career alongside his father as an assistant and second camera. In 1985, he began a series of freelance projects, working first at RAI London and then with the New York RAI corporation. In the mid-90s he turned his full attention to independent documentary production serving as a producer, director, cinematographer and cameraman on several films including Drug Stories, about the heroin traffic of the Golden Triangle area, and Victory at all Costs, about the after-affects of the war in Vietnam. Other works include: Crucifige (Let's Crucify), Le Voci Fuori (Voices Off), Jung (War) in the Land of the Mujaheddin, Socialmente Pericolosi (A Danger to Society), and Afghanistan Year 1380.

Eric Talbert has volunteered with Emergency USA since 2005 and is now its Vice President. His main duties as an executive board member include volunteer coordination, medical staff recruitment and fund raising in NYC and nationwide.

Reva Goldberg is Communications & Fellowships Manager at Cinereach, a NYC not-for-profit film foundation and production company that champions vital stories, artfully told. She has an extensive background in film and TV production and audience building. Before joining Cinereach, she was a producer at Pureland Pictures where she produced the documentary All of Us, which aired on Showtime. Goldberg also co-produced Pureland’s Toe to Toe, a narrative feature that premiered at Sundance ‘09. In 2004, Goldberg was Associate Producer of an Emmy-nominated History Channel documentary on the 9/11 Commission (produced by CBS). She has worked with TLC, UPN, Discovery, The Travel Channel, Washington Square Films/Arts, Cronkite Productions and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Goldberg is a graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.
