College Jam 2010

PRO-TV Youth Media Program will be hosting its 4th Annual College Jam: Media & Arts Festival. College Jam is directed toward young people looking to apply to college, particularly with a focus on media/communications, film/video, and the arts. The information presented will address students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and we would like to invite your young people to join us.
The day will consist of two workshops and a panel discussion with current college students majoring in various areas related to the arts and communication. Workshops include information on “Funding Your College Future: Financial Aid and Scholarship Education” hosted by Chinisha Scott, PRO-TV Program Coordinator, which will address the basics of the financial aid search, applying to government financial aid (FAFSA), resources for grants and scholarships, and what college will really cost you. The final workshop of the day, “What Makes a Good Portfolio? Developing Your Arts Submission” will be a guide to developing a portfolio that will make you competitive to institutions that require an arts submission. Whether you are a filmmaker, photographer, or other visual artist, this workshop will provide basic information that will help you build a strong portfolio.
In addition, there will be a panel discussion with former PRO-TV students addressing issues of:
- private school versus public school
- misconceptions of attendance at community colleges
- differentiating between types of financial aid available to you
- managing your time and money while in college
- getting the most out of your college experience
- making sure you succeed academically
- and other questions that high school students applying to colleges may have.
College Jam will be in DCTV’s third floor studio space. DCTV is located at 87 Lafayette Street, between Walker and White streets in lower Manhattan. College Jam is from 11:00 AM to 1 PM. The first workshop will begin at 11AM. For more information or to register, please contact Chinisha Scott at 646-484-4642 or chinisha@dctvny.org.
