While Kirsten Johnson may best be known for her acclaimed documentary cinematography with Laura Poitras (The Oath, Citizenfour), her directorial debut feature Cameraperson premieres in New York City as a part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Museum of Modern Art’s New Directors/New Films series this month.

Drawing on footage she’s shot over the course of 25 years, Johnson searches to reconcile her part in the thorny questions of permission, power, creative ambition, and human obligation that come with filming the lives of others. Cameraperson premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and has since screened at True/False and SXSW.

Her short film, The Above premiered at 2015 New York Film Festival in the The Intercept’s Field of Vision launch, and her most recent camerawork appears in Oscar-winning Citizenfour and Very Semi-Serious. Her additional credits include The Invisible War, Asylum and Fahrenheit 9/11. She and Laura Poitras shared the 2010 Sundance Cinematography Award for The Oath.

This event is the latest edition of IFP’s “My First Time” series which welcomes the industry’s leading independent filmmakers and voices to discuss how they first achieved success. Having discovered new and inventive ways to propel their careers, these filmmakers are known throughout the industry as respected trendsetters, admired for producing cutting-edge and critically-celebrated entertainment. But how did they start? Hear them discuss how they achieved and maintained success in a highly competitive field.

This event is also a part of DCTV Presents, DCTV’s signature screening and event series that highlights innovative and provocative work from the independent filmmaking community.
