2010 Series

About

DCTV Presents is our signature screening and event series that highlights innovative and provocative work from the independent filmmaking community. From screening films by emerging artists to hosting master classes led by renowned groundbreakers in the industry, each event offers the public a unique and inclusive opportunity to share, support and embrace truly independent art.

Founded in 1972, DCTV is an independent media arts center that provides low-cost equipment rentals, editing facilities, hands-on workshops, space rentals, youth programs, and screenings & events. Its productions, reaching over 100 million viewers each year, have received 16 national Emmy Awards, 3 duPont-Columbia Awards and countless others.

DCTV Presents has programmed the works of up-and-coming filmmakers such as David Teague (Intifada NYC), Robert McFalls (HomeGrown), and Meerkat Media Collective (Stages). We have also hosted established filmmakers such as Sam Pollard (Jungle Fever, Bamboozled), Amy Sewell (Mad Hot Ballroom), Llloyd Kaufman (Toxic Avenger), Ross Kauffmann (Born into Brothels), Jem Cohen (Instrument, Chain), and John Walter (How to Draw a Bunny, Theater of War).

Rolling Submissions

DCTV Presents also has a rolling submissions process. Submissions received before October 2010 will be considered for the 2010 series. Categories include:

    Keeping it Local

In spite of powerful opposition, a diverse and vital movement stands in support of “the local.” From mom and pop shops in Queens, to self-sufficient farming communities in Bolivia, people all over the world are striving to exercise their right to choose how to live, work, and consume. Focusing on family business, small-scale agriculture, and the changing landscape of development, we are seeking films that explore the struggle for self-determination and survival.

    Living Off the Grid

Living off the grid doesn’t have to mean building an isolated home or leading a nomadic life. Its meaning encompasses the ideals of all those who forsake creature comforts to seek independence and autonomy on the margins. We are seeking films that delve into the nitty-gritty of all things fringe, underground and DIY, either in content or in filmmaking process.

    Personal Landscapes

How do we define ourselves and each other? In this post-modern age, the boundaries between gender, race, sexuality and culture are becoming increasingly blurred. With a focus on identity, we are seeking films that explore personal narratives, fragmented histories, and the quest for belonging.

    General

While DCTV has roots in documentary, we welcome films of any genre or length, including animation, experimental, found footage, video art, narrative comedy or drama as well as personal, political or historical documentaries. We are most interested in films that tell under-represented stories and break boundaries in content and style. Show us something we haven’t seen before.
