The Film

Directed by Jacques Perrin / 2003 / 89 min

Fly Away Home, Born Free, March of the Penguins... there's a long list of sweeping yet cuddly nature flicks that defined many a childhood in the early aughts. Where on the list does Winged Migration fall for you? (It's pretty high for us.)

Jacques Perrin's epic portrait of winter bird migration "soared" onto the scene from France in 2003, scooping up an Oscar nom for Best Documentary, plus the coveted César Award for Editing. Visually stunning, this film follows the fantastic odyssey of birds, spanning the species' flights over seas and continents that, frankly, no CGI can beat.

It's a different age for kids now, one filled with busier, slicker entertainment. But we still put stock in the heart-pounding thrill of seeing the natural world's gentle wonder on the big screen that touched so many of us. Nearly three decades later, Winged Migration still has so much to say. Bring your little one to discover this classic film for the first time, or to see it anew through their eyes, spending a Saturday creating a memory that will last long after the credits have rolled.

Winged Migration is rated G. Visit Common Sense Media for more information and reviews from families and teachers.

Special Guests

The screening will be introduced by parent and Sundance-winning documentary filmmaker, named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 Filmmakers To Watch, Jesse Epstein, whose daughter Ru loves Winged Migration and will tell you why.

Following the screening, we'll be joined by Allison I. Villegas Roman of The National Audubon Society who will lead a hands-on discussion/activity about our favorite feathered friends, sending your child's imagination to new heights.

Tickets are only $5 general admission and free for children 12 and under – adults may attend with up to 3 children. Free popcorn included! Doors 11:30am | Screening 12pm.
