MEERKATMEDIA ARTS COLLECTIVE
featuring Evolve (working title)
DCTV is proud to present an evening with Meerkatmedia, a Manhattan-based arts collective dedicated to making socially relevant media while employing a non-hierarchical and inclusive creative process. Less than two years old, the collective has produced over twenty short films, which have been featured in numerous film festivals, including Media That Matters, and broadcast on the French-German public arts channel "Arte."
featuring Evolve (working title)
Since June 2007, The Meerkats have been editing their first feature documentary, Evolve (working title) here at DCTV, where they also raised money for post-production with an independent fundraiser earlier this year. Created through collaborative process, and without individual accreditation, Evolve is a shining accomplishment in cooperative independent production:
| Evolve (working title) follows four older Puerto-Rican women and a group of young people of color as they create two original, intersecting theater pieces about their personal "evolution" in New York City's Lower East Side. Over the course of twenty weeks, the groups dismantle stereotypes and explore their histories, creating together a powerful work of theater, and a new vision of community. Evolve weaves together themes of immigration and gentrification, of aging and coming of age -- while asking how creating art from the stories of our own lives can transform the way we understand ourselves and each other. |
Join DCTV as we screen this work in progress, along with selected Meerkatmedia Shorts, and talk with members of the collective about a creative process that defies the traditional “me-first” attitude of the media industry.
