Bridge to Baghdad

Bridge to Baghdad
As Americans wait in anticipation to see how the dawn of a new Iraq will unfold, many questions of the war, and life under Saddam, remain unanswered. Imagine being able to call up an old friend and ask these very questions, directly, honestly, with no hesitation.

This is what happened in early May 2003, when DCTV and Chat the Planet brought together the youth of the critically acclaimed “Bridge to Baghdad” to speak again for the first time since the bombs fell. Bridge to Baghdad I was filmed on March 1, 2003 just two weeks before the start of what was to become “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” Airing on WorldLink TV, NHK (Japan Broadcasting Company), Bridge to Baghdad put the youth of New York City and the youth of Baghdad in dialogue with one another about the future of the nations which someday they will govern.

In New York, viewers met an array of young Americans, from ex-Marine Eric, to anti-war activist Alcy, to drama student Eric, son of a Lutheran preacher. Conversely, out of Baghdad came new, unique voices from Iraqi teenagers: educated, informed, and poised to speak their minds about the impending war. The Iraqi youth were adamant in their hopes for a peaceful future but still reticent about their feelings for the current regime. Was there more to this story?

Days after the U.S. declared the war officially over, Next Next Entertainment and DCTV sent a crew to a now smoldering Baghdad to locate the young Iraqis. While the American teenagers waited anxiously stateside for phone calls and emails that never came, the Iraqi youth were emerging to begin their adult lives in a strange new world. Bridge to Baghdad II allows these two groups to resume the conversation that was cut short by a war.

In Bridge to Baghdad II, the young Americans and Iraqis hold another satellite dialogue where they are finally able to ask the questions which have been burning inside them for weeks:

What happened during the war?
How do you feel now that Saddam is gone from power?
Were there things you wanted to say last time but could not because of the regime?
In this hour long special the American and Iraqi youth together tackle the largest question of all: what now?
