Online Workshop: Audio Storytelling

To support our community during this time, we are reducing all prices. We are offering Office Hours either for free or suggested donation, and in-depth Workshops on a sliding scale to be able to support our freelance instructors and cover some of our costs. In these sequestered times, try your hand at non-fiction audio. Audio storytelling can take on different exciting formats, from journalism to documentary, and podcasts to experimental collage. In this workshop, build from your foundation of audio production and post-production skills to make your own imageless story. Use the resources you have at hand to plan, record (or source) and edit aural material from interviews, field recordings and sound effects. This workshop will require production, editing, and listening assignments outside of class sessions.

This is an Online Production workshop at the Extensions level in which you create original work.

  • Differences between Podcasting, Radio, and other Audio Stories
  • Story Development
  • Interviewing Options
  • Ambient Sound and Sound Sources
  • Preparing for Recording Sessions
  • Using what you have
  • Producing a Story
  • Assembling a Story
  • Exporting and Distribution

Capacity: 8 students | Duration: 8 hrs + Office Hours
Optional Office Hours: Thurs 4/16, 4/23, 4/30
Each student will be able to have 20 minutes between the hours of 6:30-9:30pm.

Prerequisite(s): Audio Fundamentals Students must be able to work independently in an audio editing software (see Materials for examples).

Materials: Students will need a computer or other device that can connect to the internet and support Zoom video conferencing. Students must also have access to any recording devices they need for their project, and have access to an audio editing software such as Pro Tools, Hindenburg, Audacity, Audition, Reaper, etc. Students must have space to save media on their computer or an external hard drive.

This workshop requires that you work on your project outside of class hours.
