Keeping It Legal

Is it okay to show incidental logos in my film? If music is playing in the background of a scene, does it need to be licensed? Does my personal release form cover everything? Documentary filmmakers incur many legal questions while developing their project, and rightfully so. This workshop guides filmmakers through an introduction to common legal issues from their terminology to their importance, and offers suggestions on how to navigate them when they arise.

This is a Producing Clinic. It is an informal resource for independent filmmakers and is not a substitute for legal counsel. For legal advice specific to your needs, we encourage you to seek advice from an attorney.

Topics include:

  • Copyright and Trademark
  • Defamation, Privacy and Publicity
  • Trespass and Misrepresentation
  • Releases and Story Rights
  • Considerations When Licensing Music and Archival Footage
  • Fair Use
  • E&O Insurance

Capacity: 15 students | Duration: 2 hrs
