Audio Storytelling: Podcasts and Soundscapes

Give your eyes a break and try non-fiction audio. Audio storytelling can take on different exciting formats, from journalism to documentary, and podcasts to experimental collage. Add to your foundation of audio production and post-production skills to make your own imageless story by planning, recording and editing aural material such as interviews, field recordings and sound effects.

Registration includes complimentary use of a DCTV Equipment Rentals microphone, Zoom recorder, and accessories for you to record outside of the classroom on your own time. All DCTV Equipment Rentals policies apply.

This is a Production workshop at the Extensions level in which you create original work.

  • Story Development
  • Interviewing Options
  • Ambient Sound and Sound Sources
  • Preparing for Recording Sessions
  • Field Gear
  • Producing a Story
  • Assembling a Story
  • Exporting and Distribution

Capacity: 6 students | Duration: 15 hrs

Prerequisite(s): Audio Fundamentals and Pro Tools or equivalent experience is required.

Required: Students must bring their own personal hard drive. We recommend it meets the following minimum criteria:

  • 100GB free space
  • 7200 RPM
  • Mac Compatible
  • USB3 or Thunderbolt connection (recommended), Firewire 800 (possible)

This workshop requires that you work on your project outside of class hours. Registering for this workshop entitles you to free registration in Open Edit Hours (subject to availability. Please call Workshops at 212.966.4510 x. 646 to register.)

Materials: Aside from a hard drive, we provide all equipment and are committed to a 2:1 student to camera ratio. Each student will be equipped with a 27-inch iMac with 5K retina display running Pro Tools 2018.12. Personal equipment other than the hard drive is not permitted.
